Michael I (RomanianMihai I [miˈhaj]; born 25 October 1921) was King of Romania from 20 July 1927 to 8 June 1930 and again from 6 September 1940 to 30 December 1947. He was forced to abdicate in 1947 by the government controlled by the Communist Party of Romania. In addition to being the current claimant to the defunct throne of Romania, he was also a Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen until 10 May 2011, when he renounced this title.[1][2][3][4]
As a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom through both of his parents he is a third cousin of Queen Margrethe II of DenmarkKing Harald V of NorwayKing Juan Carlos I of SpainKing Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.[5] He is the last surviving monarch from the Interbellum[6] and the oldest of only three surviving heads of state from World War II,[7][8][9][10] the others being the former King Simeon II of Bulgaria and Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet
